St Augustine’s Early Years Foundation Stage
At St. Augustine’s Catholic Academy we greatly value the important role that the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ plays in laying secure foundations for life-long learning and development. We understand that every child is a unique learner, through our curriculum and dedication to the gospel values we aim for all children to become resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.
In the Foundation Stage we aim to deliver all the areas through a combination of direct teaching and planned, purposeful play; a balance of adult-led, continuous provision and child-initiated activities. Through indoor and outdoor activities our children explore and develop learning experiences, which help them to make sense of the world. They have the opportunity to think creatively alongside other children, as well as on their own. They communicate with others as they investigate and solve problems.
There are seven areas of learning and development. In addition to these seven areas, at St Augustines' Catholic Academy Religious Education is also embraced as a key area for learning and development. All areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive. These three areas, the prime areas, are:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development – Building Relationships; Self-Regulation; Managing Self
- Communication and Language – Listening, attention and Understanding; Speaking
- Physical Development – Gross Motor Skills; Fine Motor Skills
We also support children in four specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are:
- Literacy – Comprehension; Word Reading; Writing
- Mathematics- Number; Numerical Patterns
- Understanding the World- Past and Present; People, Culture and Communities; The Natural World
- Expressive Arts and Design- Creating with Materials; Being imaginative and Expressive
Throughout their learning journey we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum which will enable each child to develop personally, socially, emotionally, spiritually, physically, creatively and intellectually to his/her full potential. Teaching and learning is based on the understanding that children have individual needs and interests and develop at different rates.
Please see below the Statutory document 'Development Matters' for all providers of 0-5 year old care. This has been differentiated and staggered across the academic year in our 'Long Term Plan'. At St Augustine's the children choose their topics based on their own interests. Teachers then target the learning outcomes to match the children's choice.
