Modern Foreign Languages

At St Augustine's Catholic Academy, we place a strong emphasis on learning the French language and exploring French culture. We are fortunate to have a specialist French teacher who brings language learning to life through engaging lessons, authentic experiences, and a passion for helping students develop real-world communication skills. From early exposure to confident conversation, our students gain the tools to connect with the wider world and appreciate the joy of learning another language.

Key Stage 1 and Early Years

Modern Foreign Languages is not a statutory subject for Key Stage One or the Early Years Foundation Stage, but our children are so enthusiastic about learning that we ensure that they have French sessions with a specialist teacher.

They have lots of fun learning French in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One, and have already learnt some of the basics:

  • Bonjour (Hello)
  • Comment ça va? (How are you?)
  • Comment t'appelles tu? (What’s your name?)
  • Quelle âge as tu? (How old are you?)
  • Tu habite ou? (Where do you live?)
  •

Our fabulous children know lots of French songs, including:

Heads,Shoulders, Knees and Toes, and they are also learning colours, numbers, foods and directions.

En fait nous sommes formidables, sans doute.

Key Stage Two

In Key Stage Two, our pupils enjoy rich and engaging French lessons led by a specialist French teacher. With expert guidance, children build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in French through interactive activities, songs, games, and cultural projects. Our specialist teaching and tailored support ensure that every child can progress at their own pace while developing a love for language learning. Pupils are given exciting opportunities to apply their French in real-life contexts, deepening their understanding of French culture and broadening their global outlook whilst preparing them for secondary school.

Careers

Learning French opens doors to a wide range of exciting career opportunities. As one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, French is a valuable skill in fields such as international business, travel and tourism, law, diplomacy, teaching, translation and the arts.  Learning the important skill of a modern foreign language opens up many future careers both in the UK and abroad. Some of these exciting opportunities include being a language teacher, a translator, a skiing instructor or even working as a foreign journalist for a TV channel.

At our school, we help pupils see how learning French connects to real-life careers. We explore how language skills are used by pilots, fashion designers, journalists, and even sports professionals who work across different countries.

One of our pupils said, “I love learning French because it makes me feel like I can talk to people all over the world!”

Through inspiring lessons and cultural experiences, we aim to show children that learning French today can open doors to a world of future possibilities.
